Do Not Hold Back
While the people of God were in exile, God spoke to them through the prophet Isaiah of a bright future. A horizon that from their vantage point they could not see. Two powerful images describe the landscape of God’s promise (Isa 54:1). Barren and divorced women like the exiles were outcasts whose future was anything but bright. The barren woman would be blessed with an abundance of children. The divorced woman’s marriage would be restored and never again threatened. The new horizon for Israel was filled with the promise of God’s abundant provisions.
Surrounding the people of God was a landscape of despair and discouragement. They are given a promise and charged to act in faith on the basis of God’s word; nothing more nothing less, no miracle, no sign just God’s word. Could they trust God?
“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtain wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes” (Isa 54:2 emphasis added).
