“Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your unplowed ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain” (HCSB).
When Ashley and I bought our new home no landscaping had been done. When we looked out our window we saw dirt and mud all the way to the edges of our property. It didn’t take long to go pick up a bag of “Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue” and begin spreading it over the yard.
There was no need to water the lawn because the Lord blessed us with good rain at the time I planted the seeds. I waited for about 3 weeks and when the grass didn’t begin coming in as well as I had hoped I began investigating. What I didn’t consider was the condition of the soil in which I was planting.
When I was reminded what I already knew I borrowed a tiller and broke up the ground. The uncultivated soil was hard and resistant to the seed planting and growth. But when I planted the seeds in well prepared soil, God’s sun and rain worked a miracle and grass began to grow and grow well. They don’t call it “Tall Fescue” for nothing!
This principle of well prepared soil and God’s blessing are not only good for gardening but also in our spiritual lives. God’s prophet Hosea preached this principle to Israel. They had planted seeds of self reliance and sin instead of trusting in God. They were reaping wickedness, injustice, and lies; especially since they believed their safety and success came from their large military (Hosea 10:13).
Hosea petitioned his brothers to walk in God’s way–to break up the sin-hardened soil of their hearts and “seek the Lord.” The promise was that if they would break up the ground and “sow seeds of righteousness” then they would reap the Lord’s blessing.
What does the soil of your heart look like? Is it ready for the blessing that the Lord is going to bring our body as a result of trusting Him? Is it receptive or resistant to God’s word for you? Are you trusting in your own way or His? It is time to seek the Lord, to sow right attitudes and actions in your life and grow in His way!
