Day 2:

Genesis 17:1

“When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, “I am God Almighty.  Live in My presence and be blameless” (HCSB).

One early October morning I was out in the woods waiting for the turkeys to move. There was a front moving in and thunder in the distance. With each boom the tom turkeys would let out a loud gobble. I could hear them moving closer and closer. With their approach the storm approached.

As the lightening moved closer I decided that it would be best for me to leave the woods. Just before I got to my car the huge storm began raining large drops of water on me from the dark morning sky. The most awesome part of the storm was the lightning. You could hear the crack and feel the ground tremble. It made me feel small and powerless.

A storm like that reminds me of the limitless power of God. In the Hebrew text of Genesis 17:1, God appears as El-Shaddai (God Almighty) for the first time. The Israelites used this name to refer to God’s great power and limitless provision for their needs.

In this instance God was helping Abraham understand that He was “all sufficient.” Abraham need not look anywhere else for help in this life, he need only look to El-Shaddai. Abraham had tried to take his future in his own hands, trying to create an heir with Hagar, instead of waiting for El-Shaddai to come through in a mighty way.

It is amazing how God always comes through with exactly what we need at exactly the right time! What areas of your life do you need to release to El-Shaddai?
