Terrie and I began reading the Bible through on January 1, 2015. Our goal is to complete the Genesis through Revelation reading in 90 days. This is our seventh year to read the Bible completely through on the same schedule. Reading the Bible through at this pace really helps us see the continuity of God’s story. So we invite you to read along with us. When you have “ah-ha” moments with God’s word please share them with us.
Read any Bible you choose. Begin any time. It is simple. This year I have chosen the Contemporary English Version (the translation used by the Gideons). The Bible I am using has 740 pages, divided by 90 (or any number of days that you choose as your goal for reading the bible through), that is 8.2 pages per day; so my goal is 9 pages per day. If I am able to stay on schedule, then I will finish in 83 days, which gives me a week of flexibility.
When it comes to personal spiritual growth there can be no substitute to reading the Bible. Other readings are important and often help us understand the Scriptures as people share their insights. But when we read the Bible under the influence of the Holy Spirit we have direct access to the mind of God who reveals himself through the Scriptures. Consistent personal spiritual growth requires a daily infusion of God’s Word.
May we be able to say with the Psalmist, “I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psa 119:11, CEV). We must read the Bible in order to live it, which is the real goal.
