December 2 is the first Sunday of Advent. The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” The focus of the season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Messiah in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Advent celebrates the revelation of God in Jesus whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God.
Advent also symbolizes the spiritual journey of individuals and congregations, as they affirm that Jesus has come, that He is present in the world today, and that He will come again in power. We live “between the times” and are called to holy living and faithful stewardship. Obedience is the result of His Advent in our lives.
Our theme for Advent and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is “Obedient.” The four Sundays of December prior to Christmas we will look at the “Obedient” lives of some Biblical persons. We will learn from them how we too can be “Obedient.” Let us anticipate what God is going to do, hope for His coming, and live “Obedient” to His mission. I believe that is living in the spirit of Advent and Christmas.
I am really glad I am your pastor.
